“We have to go outside the system and create and imagine new ways of being in community and in relationship with each other,” says Peter Buffett. He and his wife Jennifer lead the NoVo Foundation, which has recently invested in Salmon Nation. “We’re trying to knit back together the community and the land that feeds us,” Peter says. “If we can provide a non-prescriptive model, we can spread the word and likewise learn from other communities as well.” Peter believes conventional philanthropy “just keeps the existing structure of inequality in place… I’m really not calling for an end to capitalism; I’m calling for humanism.”
